What is Agentic Analytics?
Agentic Analytics is an approach to Business Intelligence (BI) that supplements static dashboards with AI agents that can reason through questions and query data on their own. Instead of clicking predefined filters on a Tableau or Power BI chart, an executive types a natural language question (for example, “Why did our European logistics costs spike last week?”). The AI agent plans an approach, writes SQL, runs the query against the Data Lakehouse, reads the result, notices if the query was wrong, rewrites and reruns it, and finally returns a natural language answer, often with a generated chart.
For two decades, Business Intelligence has been limited by the “Dashboard Bottleneck.” A data analyst has to anticipate what leadership wants to know, write the SQL, and build the chart. If the CEO asks a new question, it often becomes a ticket for the data team and a wait of days. Agentic Analytics shortens this cycle by giving business users a virtual analyst that can run root-cause investigations in minutes.
The Architecture of the Agentic Loop
Agentic Analytics is more than text generation. It requires a software architecture around a Large Language Model (LLM).
The Tool Registry and the Semantic Layer
An LLM does not know the company’s database schema on its own.
To enable Agentic Analytics, the data engineering team exposes a structured Semantic Layer to the AI. They give the agent a “Tool Registry” that defines functions such as execute_sql_query().
They also give the agent documentation of the data: “The Sales table contains Revenue stored as a Decimal. Do not use the Legacy_Sales table.”
The ReAct (Reason + Act) Execution
When the executive asks the question, the agent enters a ReAct loop:
- Thought: The agent reasons, “I need European logistics costs. I will query the
Logisticstable filtering byRegion = 'EU'.” - Action: The agent calls the
execute_sql_query()tool, passing in the SQL it wrote. - Observation: The Data Lakehouse returns an error:
Column 'Region' does not exist. - Thought: The agent reads the error, checks the schema, and corrects itself: “The column is named
continent. I will rewrite the query.”
The agent repeats this loop until it has the data it needs, then writes the final summary for the executive. A good deployment also shows the SQL it ran so analysts can verify the answer.
The Security Imperative (Read-Only Access)
Agentic Analytics carries real security risk if engineered poorly.
If an AI agent has full database credentials and makes a mistake, it could run a destructive command such as DROP TABLE.
Architects therefore isolate the agent. It runs under a dedicated service account in the Data Lakehouse that has read-only permissions, scoped to the datasets it needs, so a faulty query cannot modify or delete production data.
Summary of Technical Value
Agentic Analytics extends data democratization. By combining the reasoning abilities of Large Language Models with database tool loops and well-defined Semantic Layers, it reduces reliance on prebuilt dashboards and lets business leaders run in-depth, investigative analysis much faster than a ticket-driven process allows.
