What is the Agentic Lakehouse?
The Agentic Lakehouse is a term Dremio uses for an open Data Lakehouse designed to be consumed by AI agents as well as by people. Historically, data architectures (such as data warehouses and BI dashboards) were built around human users: they produced visual charts and relied on people to navigate folders and interpret results. An AI agent cannot “look” at a pie chart. It needs structured, machine-readable semantic context, and the Agentic Lakehouse is built to provide it.
If an enterprise points an AI agent at an Amazon S3 bucket full of poorly named Apache Parquet files and asks it to investigate a drop in revenue, the agent is likely to join the wrong tables and report incorrect numbers. The Agentic Lakehouse reduces this risk by wrapping raw data in a semantic and governance layer that tells the AI what the data means and how metrics should be calculated.
The Architecture of AI-Readiness
The Agentic Lakehouse rests on the idea that data should be self-describing and discoverable through standard protocols.
1. The Unified Semantic Layer
This is the core of the Agentic Lakehouse. Data engineers define business logic (for example, the exact formula for Gross_Margin) inside the engine’s Semantic Layer.
When an AI agent connects to the Lakehouse (typically through the Model Context Protocol or an Arrow Flight SQL connection), it sees curated, documented virtual datasets instead of raw files. Because the business logic is already defined in the Semantic Layer, the agent does not have to reinvent metric formulas, which reduces the chance of calculation errors.
2. High-Speed Access via Apache Arrow
AI agents and the Python tools around them may need to pull large result sets. Moving millions of rows over row-oriented JDBC/ODBC connections or as JSON payloads over REST is slow and memory-intensive. Apache Arrow Flight SQL streams query results in Arrow’s columnar binary format directly into Python environments such as pandas or Polars, avoiding most serialization overhead and keeping the agent’s workflow fed with data.
3. Vector Search and Text Embeddings
Agents often combine structured data with unstructured content through RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation). An Agentic Lakehouse keeps the structured tables (Apache Iceberg) and the retrieval layer under the same governance, so an agent can combine financial figures with relevant documents without copying data into ungoverned silos.
Summary of Technical Value
The Agentic Lakehouse aligns data infrastructure with how AI systems consume data. By wrapping the open Data Lakehouse in a governed Semantic Layer, using Arrow Flight for fast data transfer, and supporting retrieval workflows, it helps AI agents run more accurate and more secure analytical investigations across large volumes of corporate data.
