Collibra and the Open Lakehouse: How It Compares to DataHub and Polaris

Collibra is a commercial data governance and catalog platform for glossaries, stewardship, and policy. See how it fits an Iceberg lakehouse next to DataHub.

What is Collibra?

Collibra is a commercial data and AI governance platform. Founded in 2008 in Brussels, it sells a data catalog, business glossary, stewardship workflows, lineage, data quality and observability, privacy tooling, and AI governance features. In June 2025 Collibra acquired Raito, a data access governance startup, to extend its platform toward managing who can access data.

Collibra’s core strength is process: defining business terms, assigning owners and stewards, routing approvals, and keeping audit evidence for regulators. It is typically bought by large, regulated organizations where governance workflow spans many systems, of which the lakehouse is one.

Where Collibra Fits in an Iceberg Lakehouse

An Apache Iceberg lakehouse has a technical catalog, such as Apache Polaris, AWS Glue, or Unity Catalog, that engines commit through and that enforces table permissions. Collibra is not that catalog. It ingests metadata from the technical catalog and the engines through connectors, adds business context, and runs workflows on top.

The practical split: the technical catalog and the query engine enforce access (roles, row-level security, column masking); Collibra records why a policy exists, who approved it, and which business terms and regulations it relates to. When a steward classifies a column as sensitive in Collibra, that decision should be pushed down to the catalog or engine that actually enforces it, either through an integration or through automation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Collibra open source?

No. Open-source alternatives in the metadata platform category include DataHub and OpenMetadata.

Does Collibra replace an Iceberg catalog?

No. Engines still need an Iceberg catalog to create, commit, and read tables. Collibra describes and governs those tables from the side.

When is Collibra the right choice?

When governance workflow, audit evidence, and business glossary management across many systems are the main requirement, and the budget fits an enterprise license.
