What is Dremio Cloud?

Dremio Cloud is Dremio's fully managed lakehouse service. It queries data where it lives, including Apache Iceberg tables, with no clusters to run yourself.

What is Dremio Cloud?

Dremio Cloud is Dremio’s managed lakehouse service: Dremio runs the platform, so teams query their data without operating query clusters themselves.

Dremio Cloud is the hosted version of Dremio, which describes itself as an agentic lakehouse platform. As organizations move from monolithic warehouses to architectures that separate storage and compute, Dremio Cloud provides a SQL query engine, a built-in catalog for Apache Iceberg tables, and a semantic layer in one service, which reduces the infrastructure a data team has to administer.

Core Architecture and Mechanics

Dremio Cloud’s main components work as follows:

  • Runs as a service operated by Dremio. Dremio manages the control plane and query engines, and engines can scale with workload demand instead of being sized by hand.
  • Stores tables in open formats (like Apache Iceberg). Dremio’s Open Catalog organizes Iceberg tables, and other tools can load data into it, so the data is not locked into a proprietary format.
  • Queries data where it lives. Dremio Cloud can connect to external catalogs, object storage, and databases and present them as one view, which reduces the need for pipelines that copy data into a separate warehouse. Reflections (precomputed, automatically maintained copies of query results) speed up common queries.

Dremio also works with adjacent tools such as dbt, BI tools, and Python clients through standard interfaces like JDBC, ODBC, and Arrow Flight.

Why Dremio Cloud Matters in the Modern Data Stack

Dremio Cloud is a commercial service, not an open standard. Its value is that it moves cluster operations, upgrades, and much of query acceleration from the data team to the platform, which can lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

For enterprises with decentralized teams, Dremio Cloud lets each team work against shared, governed data without disrupting other teams’ workloads. Its semantic layer (wikis, labels, and lineage) gives both people and Dremio’s built-in AI agent the business context needed to answer questions in natural language.

Key Benefits

  • Scalability: Query engines can scale with changes in data volume and query concurrency.
  • Open Formats: Data stays in open formats like Apache Iceberg in your object storage, which reduces vendor lock-in.
  • Observability: Job history and lineage help engineers monitor queries and trace how datasets are built.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a generalized open-source standard?

No. Dremio Cloud is a commercial managed service from Dremio. It is built on open standards, such as Apache Iceberg tables and Apache Arrow, but the service itself is proprietary. This distinction matters when evaluating total architecture costs.

Does this require moving data into Dremio?

No. Dremio queries data where it resides, in your object storage, catalogs, and databases. You can also create Iceberg tables in Dremio’s Open Catalog when you want Dremio to manage them.

How does Dremio Cloud impact data governance and security?

Dremio Cloud enforces access through role-based access controls (RBAC) and privileges on catalogs, folders, tables, and views, and it keeps query history for auditing. Views in the semantic layer can expose only the rows and columns each group should see.
